Project 52: Week 21 – Happy Memorial Day!

Today is one of those days where you sleep in and BBQ…..and remember those you’ve loved and lost and those who have served our country.

A few years ago, I was honored to visit the Normandy American Cemetary and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France where thousands of American soldiers have been laid to rest.  Perched above the shores of Omaha Beach where so many lost their lives in World War II, their finally resting place is an inspiring setting.  Walking through the rows upon rows of crosses and stars was humbling.  Reading the Memorial walls filled with names was emotional – those who were never found or identified but fought in Normandy – especially when I came across a name that could very well be found in my family tree.

This experience was amazing and will always remind me of the sacrifices made by so many so that we could enjoy freedom today.  To those that have served or who are currently serving, thank you!!!

Project 52: Week 20

Well, friends, it looks like spring is on its way out….sort of.  Snow fell last night in the mountains but the temps in the valley are rising.  The tulips and daffodils have finished blooming and most have started wilting.

Overall, I’m excited for the change in season but will miss the things of spring!

Project 52: Week 19 – Memories

One thing I absolutely love about being a photographer is the chance to preserve a memory.  I don’t have to remember every detail of my travels as I can return any time just by visiting my pictures. I also have the opportunity to capture a new memory that can enhance my family’s legacy.

My great-grandfather, George Smith, worked for Kennecott Copper many years ago. I have visited Kennecott’s Bingham Canyon Mine a few times over the years, each time seeing something new. The landscape of the mine has changed dramatically since George’s time but one thing remains unchanged – the memories that I attach to the mine.  I never had the opportunity to meet him as he died one month before I was born, but I have seen his handicraft and have heard the stories.  Now, living in a community built on what was once Kennecott land and within site of the mine, I can see my great-grandfather’s place in my world every day.

The images I captured this week will make sure I don’t forget him any time soon :-)

Project 52: Week 18

April showers bring May flowers…but what are May showers supposed to bring? The threat of showers this May bring wonderful sunsets to the lengthening days.  And when lucky enough, the showers bring a cool down to the rising temperatures.  I love spring storms, don’t you?
